Free Texture Tuesday: Grunge Frames

Free Texture Tuesday on bittbox.com never disappoints, and this week’s is awesome. Here’s the low-down from Caleb: “After browsing Flickr for some texture ideas, I ran across a cool grunge frame image and thought I would give it a whirl myself. Everywhere in a Flash: The Quantum Physics of Photosynthesis

“The analogy I like is if you have three ways of driving home through rush hour traffic. On any given day, you take only one. You don’t know if the other routes would be quicker or slower. But in quantum mechanics, you can take all three of these routes simultaneously. You don’t specify where you are until you arrive, so you always choose the quickest route,” said Greg Scholes, a University of Toronto biophysicist. Very Few Content Creators = Massive Opportunity

A recent study by Pew Internet suggests that teens and young adults are blogging and using Twitter less and less, but are using social media more often. A post over on Mashable goes on to say, “Pew found that teens are avid social networkers: 73% of 12-17 year olds, in fact. They are posting pictures, commenting on status updates, and sending IMs.”

What I found fascinating was the last section of Mashable’s post, Conclusions: Teens Aren’t Heavy Content Creators. It reads, “the trends seem clear: teens love to be online, but they’re not terribly interested in writing blog posts or maintaining a stream of tweets.”

Why do I find all this so interesting? Because businesses today are so eager to get on the social media bandwagon, thinking that doing so is a sure-fire way to achieve big profits. But if 73% of teens are using social media, why aren’t they all billionaires? Because it’s not about social media…that’s what old-model businesses are not getting. It’s not about social media, it’s about content.

Teens are doing what teens have always done; they’re socializing. Meanwhile, very few people are creating really killer content. Teens aren’t doing it, and they’re wired to the gills. Old-model businesses aren’t doing it either and they have armies of employees and huge financial resources.

That’s what excites me about what’s happening…very few people are creating really kick-ass content, and that means there’s a huge, gaping hole that demands to be filled…And for little guys like me who love to create content, that’s freakin’ huge!
